Strategy needs innovation. Innovation needs strategy

Companies are increasingly confronted with an uncertain, complex, and dynamic business environment. To be successful in the long term, they must continuously adapt to the rapid changes in the environment.

To make this possible, strategic innovation units can continuously develop new competitive advantages for the company. For this purpose, they must systematically develop innovations with a clear strategic contribution instead of innovating "on the greenfield“.

For more than 10 years, venture.idea has been working on the challenge of how innovation units can help established companies to remain innovative and successful over time. The answer lies in the specifically developed Innovation Capability Check, based on the practical experiences and joint research & education with the HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management and the SGMI Management Institute St. Gallen.

The Innovation Capability Check allows to determine the status quo of the existing organizational capabilities from innovation units for the strategic renewal of their parent company.  The resulting recommendations for action then offer the possibility to establish and apply the required dynamic capabilities for strategic innovation through targeted measures in the most important organizational levers of the innovation unit.

Dynamic capabilities for strategic innovation

Strategic innovation units contribute to sustainable business success by being able to continuously address new opportunities from changes in the environment with appropriate solutions. This strategic innovation is enabled by five "dynamic capabilities" in the organization:

  • SCOPING: Ability to define the strategic contribution of the corporate venturing unit and specify it through strategic goals and criteria
  • CONFIGURING: Ability to (re)prioritize the innovation portfolio based on strategic key performance indicators and allocate resources accordingly
  • SENSING: Ability to derive new opportunities from the combination of environmental changes with internal strengths & weaknesses
  • SEIZING: Ability to develop, test, and iterate new solutions in selected opportunities in a customer-centric manner
  • TRANSFORMING: Ability to successfully implement selected solutions with the required  (adapted) processes, resources, and competencies
